HTC Vive - First Impressions

Now that I've had a few days to actually experience my HTC Vive, I wanted to take a few minutes to give some first impressions.  Setup was easy to follow, but did take a while.  I mounted the room sensors in my bedroom where I have about 6.5 x 10 feet of clear space...which luckily just fit the minimum dimensions after the tests.  Eventually, I'll move it into a larger space.

All of my experiences so far have used Room Scale, which allows you to move freely in the space you've allocated.  The first type is what I'd call a passive VR Experience, like The Blu, where the scenario is happening around you and you get to be in the middle of it.  None of my actions affect what is happening, but it is a very impressive way to experience something.

Where the Vive REALLY shines is in the active VR experience, like the Budget Cuts Demo, where your actions are integral to the experience.  It is impossible to describe what this is like without experiencing it.  As I played this demo, which is a stealth game, I had to peak around a corner to see an enemy.  So, I literally, physically leaned around and looked.  It's so natural and makes you feel completely like you are in that world.  Check out the video of my son to see just how immersive it can be.

All of this amazing aside, it does get tiring using Room Scale for extended periods.  Something I have not experienced it is sitting in my chair and playing something from a cockpit or FPS perspective.  I'm told that Dying Light has this option and I'll likely pickup Elite Dangerous soon...but I'd love to hear some suggestions on what to play :)  I plan to do posts about individual games as I spend time with them, so check back for those soon!

Felicia Day's Memoir #NeverWeird

Tuesday, September 01, 2015

I've had mad nerd love for Felicia Day for many years, but after reading her new book...I may actually be in love with her.  She once lived in Kentucky, knows what the Mason/Dixon line is, and even drove to New Jersey to meet someone in person from the internet.  We're basically the same person. ;)

I'm happy I bought the audio version of the book because it's like listening to her tell me the story of her life.  Felicia reads it like she's sitting next to you talking casually, so it's easy and fun to listen to.  It also helps that she cares about are the same geeky things I've loved all of my life.  She's very clear that this book isn't for everyone and she's right, but I feel sad for those people.

I especially loved hearing about the making of one of my favorite shows, The Guild.  Most people outside of the entertainment industry assume that we all just have fun and make loads of money in our work.  Felicia describes a time for her when she had to put everything she had (physically, emotionally, and monetarily) into getting this show made, mainly because web series were in their infancy.  It hits home for me because of how often myself and those around me put so much extra time and effort into the game we are trying to ship...simply because we want it to be as special as possible.  You want everyone that experiences your work to feel like you gave it your all to make it as great as it can be.

Grab your copy HERE.  If you like the content my blog...I'd say there's a better than fair chance you'll love the book.

10 Hours In: Dragon Age Inquisition

Friday, June 19, 2015

This is actually my second try at Dragon Age Inquisition since I wasn't able to get into it the first time. This time, I got Dragon Age Keep setup right and am having a good time with it, but I got to a good stopping point in the story so have decided to take a break (I'll avoid any spoilers here).

Just like with Dragon Age Origins, I find myself just focusing on my main character in combat and allowing the AI to control the other three.  I even auto upgrade them for the most part and focus on taking a well balanced party with me.  Up to this point, I haven't really had a need to worry about the other group members...they do a great job being intelligent for the most part.

The first time I played, I didn't realize I could leave The Hinterlands and return to Haven.  I'm sure that's a big part of why I fizzled out, since I was missing out on a big part of the meta game.  Once I got to the map and was sending people on quests, etc...the game became way more enjoyable.

The cast of characters has been great, but I've found myself not focusing as much on the relationship aspects with them as I did in Origins.  I'm not sure why that is yet, maybe because I've found so many so fast, but I'm not sure that's any different than before.  My character is a Ranged Rogue and I've ended up with Cassandra, Cole (he's so interesting) and Solas in my crew for a well roudned party. Although, I just switched Cassandra to Iron Bull, that dude is cool as hell.

I plan to return after spending some time on other games, but for now...on to Witcher 3 and then Arkham Knight!
